I wasn’t expecting to win — not this time, not again. But there I was, standing in front of a cheering crowd at our church’s Glowing Years Ministry (GYM) Christmas Dinner & Dance, somehow holding the title of Best Dressed… again.
The night’s theme? Shanghai Tang.
I leaned into it — full force. Dressed in a sharply cut uniform that paid cheeky homage to old-school Sino-military style, I walked into the ballroom channeling something between a 3-star general and an overgrown choir boy with a flair for costume drama. My tunic was midnight blue, the buttons perfectly aligned, and apparently… the whole room noticed.
What I didn’t expect, though, was the reaction.
It wasn’t just applause — it was support. Every table I passed, every smiling face, every gentle nudge and whisper: “You’ve got this.”
I was self-conscious at first — a little older, a little more tired around the eyes. But there was something deeper that kept me standing tall that evening.
🎖 Not My First Rodeo
Years ago, back in med school, we had a D&D themed “Shanghai 1827”. I dressed to the nines then too — a little cheekier, a lot more carefree. I didn’t just win Best Dressed… I strutted for it. I remember being bold, fearless, a little ridiculous.
This time around felt different. Not just older — wiser. I felt seen in a different way. Less about the outfit, more about the presence. It wasn’t about impressing; it was about expressing.

🙏 Dressing Up, Lighting Up
Matthew 5:16 says,
“Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
That night, it wasn’t just about a uniform or nostalgia. It was about shining — letting God’s joy and light beam through laughter, confidence, and togetherness.
Maybe faith doesn’t always show up in robes and hymns. Maybe sometimes, it shows up in a silly costume, a hearty cheer, and a room full of people who reflect God’s love just by celebrating one another.
It’s not about me. It never really was.
It’s about using whatever I have — my creativity, my boldness, even my weird ideas — to point back to something greater.
📸 The Snapshot
I have a photo — my favorite one — taken from that evening. I’m beaming, sash draped across my chest, the crowd in a blur behind me. I look… joyful. Not just because I won, but because in that moment, I felt like I belonged. That joy? That confidence? It’s from Him.
✨ Final Thoughts
So yes… I won Best Dressed again. But more than that, I walked away reminded that God works through even the cheekiest moments. He shines through us — if we let Him.
So the next time you're feeling silly, or unsure, or a little out of place — dress up anyway. Show up anyway. Shine anyway.
Because you never know whose spirit you're lifting just by being the you God created.
